Old Glory

Who would be uncomfortable with replacing Old Glory with the Flag of One People?

Traditionalists

Old Glory is just too strong and too powerful a symbol. Not only does Old Glory represent the United States but also my personal view of who I am. It is part of my identity. Without Old Glory I would be less than I am now. I served the red, white and blue. This is too new, too different.

Those for Whom Diversity is More Important than Unity

Those who see their differences as being more important than our common experience and shared values. Those for whom heritage and race are more important than unity. Those who see rainbow families as a loss of identity. Those who identify themselves with differences and advocacy of differences.

Europeans

The most fearful and most aggrieved. The Europeans would like to see the United States as an outpost of Europe. Old Glory is explicitly derived from European symbols and culture and is seen by many people as an extension of European culture and sensibilites. The Flag of One People is NOT a European symbol. It celebrates and acknowledges that the people of the United States come from all over the world. To Europeans, the United States thus becomes even more alien and exotic, closer to India, the Phillipines or Brazil than to France or Germany.

The explicit celebration of this nation as a multi-ethnic, multi-racial culture with global roots and global reach affirms for most of the world's peoples who we really are and what we really represent. This more accurately represents both why we are admired and why we are feared. The Flag of One People is closer to the truth of who we are as a nation and as a people.
